No one is born a great leader. They hone the skills by learning, adapting and growing. Below are ten tips to help you learn, adapt and grow into the leader you know you can become, the leader your employees need.

1. Improve your people skills by working with your employees, making them a part of the decision-making process and asking their opinions. The little things count, too. Remembering your employees' names, birthdays and anniversaries makes all the difference in the world.

2. Work on your listening skills first and foremost. Set aside prejudices, get rid of distractions and honestly pay attention when people are speaking to you. What you discover may come in handy later on and improve your leadership skills.

3. Planning is everything. Without short-term and long-term plans your business lacks direction and your employees lack guidance. Be sure to invest the time to research, evaluate options, set realistic milestones, and develop a plan.

4. Inspire your employees. Motivate your employees by encouraging them, speaking honestly, discuss goals and ensure they understand they are appreciated. Give your employees something to work toward and reward success.

5. An important aspect of strong leadership skills is creating a pleasant work environment. Encourage employees to do their best, praise their efforts, make suggestions, and be helpful rather than looming over them.

6. Don't avoid problems or hesitate to discipline employees when necessary. However, you shouldn't simply lay down the law. Discuss the situation with the employee, listen to his or her explanation, be respectful, don't get personal and be firm but reasonable.

7. Don't try to take on too much. Let your employees prove themselves, assign work tasks you know they are more than up to doing. In the process, you free up the time you need to become the leader your employees need.

8. Learn from those who came before you. History is full of world renowned leaders. Discover what they accredit their success to, learn from their mistakes, and hone your own leadership skills.

9. Learning is a lifelong endeavor. Even leaders have a lot to learn, so don't hesitate to enroll in workshops, learning groups and training sessions. You can even learn from those you are teaching by watching their learning process.

10. Never forget who you are. Be true to yourself, your beliefs and your values. Great leaders never betray their integrity.
