According to Gorman's research, there are six kinds of leadership styles altogether with each of them stemming from different components of the EQ. The leaders who have grasped four kinds or more of these leadership styles---especially the vision type, democracy type, relation type and coach type---will often create the best working atmosphere and achieve the best performance.

I. Vision type

The leader of vision type mobilizes all people to work hard for a common objective, and at the same time, he (she) would often reserve sufficient room for the means each individual adopts to realize this goal.

EQ foundation: self-confidence, capacity for empathy and changing the motivational pattern.

Applicable situations: almost all the business situations.

Non-applicable situations: it is unsuitable to use it under some specific circumstances, e.g. when those working with a leader are a team made up of all kinds of experts or some colleagues more experienced than him (her).

II. Relation type

This kind of leadership style regards people as the center and the leader of relation type tries his (her) best to create a kind of harmonious atmosphere among the employees.

EQ foundation: capacity for empathy, building interpersonal relationships and communication.

Applicable situations: it is a good method not limited by time. It should be used especially under the following situations, e.g. one must make great efforts to build a harmonious atmosphere for the team, boost the team’s morale, improve the exchange between the employees and restore the trust among all people.

Non-applicable situations: it should not be used alone. Because this kind of leadership style praises the employees by following the same pattern, it may mislead the employees with bad performance who will feel that mediocre performance can be tolerated in this organization. So, it should be used in combination with the leadership of vision type.

III. Democracy type

This kind of leadership style can make people reach a unanimous agreement through everybody's participation.

EQ foundation: coordination and cooperation, leading a team and communication.

Applicable situations: as a leader is indeterminate about the best development direction of the organization, needs to solicit advice from some competent employees, and even needs their guidance. Even if there is very good perspective, the democracy leadership style can be used to get some new ideas from the employees to help implement the perspective.

Non-applicable situations: the real pain in the neck about this kind of leadership style is that it will result in countless meetings, and it is very difficult for everybody to reach a unanimous agreement. So, it should not be used at times of emergency.

IV. Coach type

The leader of coach type develops talents for the demand in the future. He (she) will help the employees determine their own good points and weaknesses and link them up with the enterprising spirit in their personal ambitions and professions. This kind of leader is very good at assigning tasks to people and often does not hesitate to stand a short-term failure in order to provide a long-term study chance for the employees.

EQ foundation: developing other people, capacity for empathy and self-consciousness.

Applicable situations: when people are "getting ready", this kind of leadership is at its best. For example, when the staff members have already known their own weaknesses and hope to improve their own performance or they have realized they need to cultivate new abilities in order to improve themselves.

Non-applicable situations: when the staff members refuse to learn or refuse to change their own working styles.

V. Demonstration type

The leader of demonstration type will set up an extremely high performance standard and take the lead to be a model. This kind of leader always forces himself (herself) to be fast and good in work, and moreover, they require everyone around themselves to do just the same.

EQ foundation: sense of responsibility, achievement motivation and entrepreneurial spirit.

Applicable situations: when all the employees of an organization are able to motivate themselves and moreover all of them have every strong abilities, hardly needing any guidance or coordination, this leadership style often plays a great role.

Non-applicable situations: like other leadership styles, it should not be used alone. The leader of demonstration type will let a lot of employees have the feeling of being crushed with his (her) excessive demand of perfection.

VI. Order type

The leader of order type needs others' immediate conformity.

EQ foundation: achievement motivation, entrepreneurial spirit and self-control.

Applicable situations: you must be prudent while adopting the order leadership style. It can only be used in case of absolute necessity, such as an organization is in a transition period or hostile take-over is approaching.

Non-applicable situations: If a leader still only depends on the order leadership style or continues to use this style after the crisis is over, it will lead to the indifference to the employees’ morale and feelings, and the long-term influence brought by it will be fatal.
